Designing the new Beetle Belt
Bringing back the Beetle has been a long-time dream of ours. Over our 20 years in business, this design sparked the most admiration and delight in our customers. We knew reviving the Beetle would be a challenge. Our goal was to remake it with a lightweight, snappy form while honoring the original design. Here’s a little insight into the journey we took to bring the Beetle back to life.
Reimagining the Beetle's Heart
The essence of our unique buckles is the internal mechanism. We began by improving how the lock worked, aiming for a smooth, snappy feel. The new Beetle uses stronger magnets for effortless operation.
Giving the Beetle Wings
Next, we gave the Beetle new lightweight wings. The Fractal 2.0's hollowed-out button inspired this design feature and carried over seamlessly to the Beetle. The new wings make the buckle look ready to take flight.
Sculpting the Beetle's Body
Moving on to the main feature, we reshaped the body of the buckle. We slimmed down the sides and carved deeper recesses to accentuate the curves. The refined shape gives the new Beetle a more delicate and refined look.
Hidden Design on the Back
Like any good sculpture, we treated each surface of the buckle with equal importance, even if it’s hidden. In a callback to the original Beetle Belt, the back has a recessed scarab design with wings outstretched to hold the locking screw. This hidden artwork serves two functions: to amplify the scarab aesthetic and subtly lighten the buckle.
First Test Flight
After we perfected the beetle's shape in wood and metal, we made a 3D printed model. This was our first time ever doing this, and the process was HARD to say the least. The buckle's many complex curves and shapes presented a significant challenge. 3D printed plastics did not want to hold these complex shapes, making testing very difficult. This was truly a learning experience.
The Beetle is Reborn
The lengthy redesign process was marked by numerous trials to ensure that parts fit seamlessly and the mechanism moved freely within the limited space available. Transforming from metal and wood to a 3D model, then to plastic, and finally back to metal was not easy. It was all worth it, though! The final results are incredible and speak for themselves. We can't wait for you to try out the new Beetle Belt.
